About the film:
“The concept of Unconditional Rebel was simple: shoot an entire film in a single ultra slow motion (1000fps) shot. We wanted to stage different scenes that followed one another like a mural, creating the sense of the characters almost being frozen in a decisive moment, symbolic and dreamlike. The shot itself lasted 5.2 seconds during which the camera, mounted on a car, moved along an 80-meter stretch of road, past a total of 80 actors. Each section had to be synchronized with the movement of the camera. Due to the extreme slow-motion, it had to move very quickly, so that once slowed down the movement was still fast enough to maintain interest, but slow enough not to lose visual clarity. The end result was a striking mismatch between the speed of the action (very slow) and the speed of the camera (fast).
The biggest challenge was to synchronize and position all the characters, as each one had a specific position and action, which had to happen at the exact moment when the camera was passing in front of them. We did a lot of 3D pre-visualisation to understand how to block each scene and to get the speed of the camera right. In the end it was the pacing of the track itself that dictated the exact speed of the car/camera, 46km/h.
We shot the singer at 50 fps on a green screen with the same camera movement (a dolly shot) but 20 times slower. At 50fps it was possible to keep the sensation of slow motion whilst still making lip synchronisation realistic. It's possible to sing double time, but x40 speed. As much as possible we kept FX in camera, however, in post we did add some additional shots on green screen (books flying, alarm clock falling, etc) in order to create amplify the sense of surreal chaos in the movement throughout the scenes.”
